Looking for NEW window treatments but, don't know where to begin?
Read this guide to decorating your windows:
Window Treatments : Curtain Panels 101

Are you looking for a new look for your windows for decorative purposes or simply for functionality - cover up a bad view or get some privacy from your nosy neighbours?

Let's take a look at some window treatments which are widely available at most home linen, home decor or fabric stores.

Most of the "ready-to-wear" (non-custom) curtains you will find today come in panels which are meant to be installed on a decorative curtain rod.

These panels come in just about any type of fabric - from faux suede to pure silk.

You get great versatility with these panels. The panels shown here will install without any custom work! Less work, less money = Great for budget decorating!

Flat Curtain panels - attaches with hooks

Basic flat curtain panels are very popular due to their ease of installation and use - and they look great and FUNCTION - i.e. they can easily be opened and closed for more privacy or light protection.

Note: The panels shown have an insulated backing which can greatly increase the energy loss in both summer and winter. These panels will keep the cold out in the winter while keeping the heat inside and the opposite is true for the summer time - keeping the cool air in while blocking out some of the hot summer air.

Over the Rod Curtain Panels

Curtains today are just so easy to install, it amazes me!

These flat panels will install simply by slipping the huge pocket (if you want to call it a pocket) over the rod. They can be easily moved to open and close as well.

Rod Pocket, Belt Loop Tab Top Panel and Rod Pocket with Faux Pleats - All-in-One Curtain Panel

Now, someone was thinking creatively when they designed these curtain panels. You get the choice of 3 looks in one panel.

Choose the belt loop tab top panel for a tailored, clean, contemporary look.

If you like things a bit more feminine and full looking, choose the classic rod pocket panels.

If you are somewhere in between, then go for the look in the large photo which incorporates a little of both looks. This might be suitable for a couple who can't decide which way to go. She wants feminine and pretty, he wants a more tailored look.

Pinch Pleat Panel Curtains

Traditional, classic and elegant but, again with a twist. The pinch pleat drapes of old were hung on simple  I-beam curtain rods which were not seen. There was no decorative rod.

You can see, in this example, the number of fabrics, both solid and prints, that these curtains come in.

These curtain panels are perfect for a more formal dining room or living room.

Goblet Pleated Panel Curtains

For that glamorous, elegant and sophisticated look, install some of these Goblet Pleated panels.

You will feel like you are in a different world - a palace or castle, perhaps?

Gorgeous panels with a little bit extra detailing than the standard pinch pleated curtain panels.

If you like luxury with a unique flavour, then these goblet pleated panels may be for you!

Would look fabulous in a romantic bedroom!

Rod Pocket Panels

Classic pouf, rod pocket panels. The pouf part is the top of the panel above the rod which gives it a feminine poufy look.

For the panels shown here, you must have a decorative rod. As you can see, the rod is clearly visible - with the exception of the rod pocket curtain panels which exposes the finial only. (shown above)

The rod can be either metal or wood. Or, if you are feeling creative, you might come up with something less traditional. "I can afford it" tip: I once used a copper pipe used for plumbing to make some inexpensive curtain rods. They were both unique, beautiful and very affordable. I purchased the finials separately.

Metal finishes are numerous - silver, pewter, brushed nickel, chrome, gold, antique gold, brass or antique brass.

As with metal, wood rods come in various shades and types of wood. Oak, cherry and mahogany are some of the common wooden rods. You will find different finishes as well - from antiqued finishes to new, clean and clear finishes.

Change your space today - Make it beautiful. You deserve it!
